A mountaintop neighborhood with history
Bluff Park was a summer retreat and orchard community long before Hoover existed. Its oldest surviving house, the overseer's home of a peach orchard, dates to 1889, and the area later became part of the City of Hoover. Most of today's homes were built from the 1940s through the 1970s, with newer infill mixed in. Many are brick or wood ranches set into the slope, with a basement level opening onto the backyard.
What makes Bluff Park gutters different
- Old, tall trees. Oaks, hickories, tulip poplars and pines, many older than the houses, drop a heavy load every fall and a pollen and tassel load every spring.
- Ridge-top weather. Storms hit the brow of the mountain hard. An F0 tornado that started near the crest in Bluff Park on May 31, 2004 damaged dozens of homes, and ordinary spring storms regularly bring down limbs on gutters.
- Aging fasteners and trim. Spiked gutters and original wood fascia are common, and decades of overflow leave soft spots behind the gutter.
- Steep lots and basements. The downhill side is often a full story taller than the front, and water from the slope above ends up at the foundation.
Care with older homes
On an older Bluff Park house, what is behind the gutter matters as much as the gutter itself. A careful pro checks the fascia before putting new screws into it, avoids leaning ladders on fragile gutters, and cleans by hand rather than blasting debris with high-pressure water. Trim on homes built before 1978 may contain lead paint, and federal EPA rules require lead-safe practices when paid work disturbs it. If your home has copper or half-round gutters, repairs should use compatible materials.
Drainage on the mountain
Red clay and sandstone sit close to the surface along Shades Mountain, so water runs off rather than soaking in. Downspouts that end at the foundation, or that point toward a neighbor downhill, create problems fast. Are guards worth it here?
