What fascia and soffit do
The fascia is the vertical board along the roof edge, where the gutter attaches. The soffit is the underside of the overhang, often vented to let the attic breathe. Together they close off the roof edge from weather and animals and give the gutter its mounting surface.
Why they rot in Hoover
- Overflowing gutters. Clogged gutters send water over the back edge as well as the front, straight onto the fascia.
- Missing or short drip edge. Rain follows the shingles and wicks behind the gutter.
- Humidity and shade. Long, humid Alabama summers and heavy tree cover keep wet wood from drying out.
- Age. Original wood trim on homes built in the 1960s through the 1980s has been through decades of paint cycles and weather.
- Gutters pulling away. Once a gutter tips out, water runs down the gap every time it rains.
Warning signs
- Peeling paint or dark streaks on the fascia below the gutter
- A gutter leaning outward or separating from the house
- Sagging soffit panels, or gaps where the soffit meets the fascia
- Scratching or scurrying sounds in the attic, or chewed corners
- Mildew or water stains on the soffit
How the repair usually goes
- The gutter comes down along the damaged section.
- Rotted wood is cut out back to sound material, and rafter tails are checked.
- New fascia is installed: primed wood, or PVC or composite trim that will not rot.
- Soffit is patched or replaced, with vents kept open for attic airflow.
- The drip edge is added or corrected so water goes into the gutter.
- The gutter is re-hung with hidden hangers into solid wood, or replaced if it is failing too.
Keeping wildlife out
Hoover's wooded lots mean squirrels, birds and bats are never far from the roof edge. A rotted fascia corner or a loose soffit panel is an easy way in. Repairs should close every gap, but if animals are already living in the attic they need to be removed first, by a licensed wildlife control operator where required, so they are not sealed inside.
